Does Sterling Silver Tarnish?
Yes. And that doesn’t mean there’s anything wrong with it.
Sterling silver naturally changes over time. Exposure to air, moisture, sweat and chemicals can cause its surface to darken, a process known as tarnishing.
Because sterling silver is typically made from 92.5% silver and 7.5% other metals, those metals can react with elements in the environment and gradually change the appearance of the piece.
Does tarnish mean the silver is fake?
No.
Real sterling silver can tarnish. In fact, a piece turning darker over time is not, by itself, a sign of poor quality or fake silver.

How quickly it happens depends on how the piece is worn, where it is stored, the surrounding environment and even the wearer’s daily habits.
Some pieces may stay bright for months. Others develop darker tones much sooner.
Why does my silver tarnish faster than someone else’s?
Silver doesn’t live the same life on everyone.
Sweat, humidity, skincare products, perfume, chemicals and how often a piece is worn can all affect how quickly its surface changes.

That is why two identical rings can look completely different after years on two different hands.
Can tarnish be removed?
In most cases, yes.
Regular cleaning and proper care can bring back much of sterling silver’s original appearance. Keeping your jewelry dry when stored and limiting prolonged contact with harsh chemicals can also slow the process.

But keeping silver untouched forever isn’t the only way to appreciate it.
Silver changes. So does its story.
A darker edge. A polished surface where your fingers touch it most. Small scratches collected from everyday wear.
Over time, these details begin to separate your piece from every other one that left the same workshop.
Same silver. Same design.
Not the same story.
At HELIOS, we believe silver isn’t made to remain untouched.
It’s made to be lived in.
